The resolution passed with 595 to 12 and 74 abstentions.
The members of the European Parliament stressed that 'citizenship by investment' (CBI) schemes, under which third country nationals can get nationality rights in exchange for an investment, undermine the essence of the EU citizenship. Hence, the MEPs demanded that such schemes must be phased out.
Parliament welcomes the European Commission's commitment to limit the access of wealthy Russians with ties to the Russian government to the citizenship of EU member states, and calls for all CBI and RBI schemes in the EU to exclude Russian applicants with immediate effect.
